To be sung to the tune of Jaques Brel's 'Amsterdam'
Oh remember the cross, one of many it's true
An atrocity only the Romans would do
Just as painful and cruel as their minds could devise
Fit for those their supporters were sure to despise
At the foot of the cross watching hours of pain
There the friends of the victim were urged to remain
'Till the struggles would end as they all knew they would
Such an evil thing surely could never be good
Oh remember the cross, that one cross of renown
Where the heir of creation was beaten and bound
As the prophets foretold and as Jesus had taught
With the blood of the sinless salvation was bought
I accept it by faith for I can't understand
How the sins of all nations were heaped on one man
And he prayed for his oppressors and cried "It is done"
And the captain declared "This was surely God's son"
Oh remember the cross, and the thieves on each side
As in agony each was preparing to die
And the one offered taunts "Save us all if you can"
While the other replied "Don't you fear God nor man?
You are guilty as I, but this man should be free
If you are who you say, Lord, will you pray for me?"
And by fear one was lost and by love one was saved
Oh remember those thieves and the choices they made
Oh remember the cross! Oh remember the cross!
