What is dogma?
At the date of writing, Wikipedia says dogma is belief or doctrine held by a religion or any kind of organization to be authoritative.
It's interesting to contrast dogma to science.
Is dogma good?
Wikipedia concludes When used nowadays, the word 'dogma' is usually used in a negative and derogatory manner. For example: when employees talk about unpopular company policies.
But can we do without dogma?
It's fairly well accepted that you can't assume anything you wish to later prove. So, the foundations of any belief system cannot be logically proven. Notably, you can't logically prove the axioms of logic.
Nor can the foundations of science be established scientifically. At their core is a dogmatic basis which can never be established by using the very rules and principles which we are seeking to justify.
As a Christian, I have no trouble accepting science. But science has limitations. Those who think that all of their beliefs are scientific are naive and self-deceived.
Most notably, when I pray for a miracle I am stepping outside of science. Science can neither prove nor disprove the action of God, as one of its assumptions is that no external action is occurring. - YiCaa
