the Trinity

a wrangles page

Many Christians find the concept of the Trinity or the Holy Trinity very helpful in thinking about God. This concept states that God is one being but has three persons:

but a few are not so sure. It seems to defy commonsense and logic. It isn't actually mentioned in the Bible.

The concept arose as the Church struggled (yes, wrangles are not new, or even necessarily bad) with the nature of Jesus Christ.

He was wholly God, yet wholly human.

He seems to be omniscient at some times and not others. But so does God. Even in the Old Testament, God changes his mind, frequently. Perhaps all of these mysteries are more the result of our limited understanding than God's limited consistency.

At the very least, most Christians find the concept of the Trinity useful. Many make it an article of faith. But a few regard it as leading to error. Members of other faiths sometimes suggest that the Trinity shows that Christians are not really monotheists at all, but believe in three gods. This is particularly offensive to followers of Islam.

Many Christian hymns are based on the Trinity. It provides the songwriter with a logical (?) framework for exploring the subject of the hymn. Again, it seems useful.
